Obituary for Mario Oscar Reyes Sr.

Mr. Mario Oscar Reyes Sr, 80, passed on January 17, 2021 at Tucson Medical Center in Tucson, AZ, from complications of COVID-19.

Mario was born in El Paso, TX on August 15, 1940. His family then relocated to Los Angeles, CA at age 4. He fondly remembered the train ride to California, over the rolling hills of Orange County, when Knotts Berry Farm was an actual farm, and there was no Disneyland-just orange orchards. He was a wonderful son and brother. He attended Garfield High School and graduated class of 1958.

Mario then joined the United States Air Force where he served for four years. While stationed at Davis Monthan Air Force Base he was introduced to the love of his life, Anita. They married six months later; this never-ending love lasted through 58 years of marriage and beyond.

He is survived by his loving wife Anita, two children, Marie (Jorge Piña) and Mario Jr (Maria Guadalupe), five grandsons and one granddaughter that adore him. He also leaves behind a brother and nieces and nephews. Not to forget his life-long friends from Magma Copper Mine, and his years playing and managing slow pitch softball. We cannot forget his favorite companion, his Pug “Frida”.

Mario worked as an underground miner at San Manuel BHP for 34 years and retired to become a great softball player and coach. He was proud of the hard work he did, and loved reminiscing about his years working in San Manuel, Arizona. His greatest accomplishments were being a loving husband, father and grandfather. He is remembered as a true gentleman, a man of few words, and someone that could always be counted on.

Memorial services are Thursday, January 28, 2021 at Abbey Funeral Chapel, at 9 am; however, due to COVID-19 restrictions only 10 immediate family members can attend. Burial services are at 11:30 am at Evergreen Cemetery (on the Miracle Mile side -by the main offices)
.
Mario’s family is comforted and strengthened by faith in God and knowing that he is with the Lord.
